I was very overwhelmed with life having just spent four years caring for my wife who lost her battle with cancer. My wife was my son’s carer and I became his new carer while trying to reconnect back into the workforce. I was absolutely lost feeling it was an impossible task. Since connecting with Your Caring Way, my overwhelmed feelings eased, and my confidence is building.

Finding Your Caring Way program was a game changer for me because the program's purpose is to support people in the same situation as me. I received not only valuable information on various pathways but also individual assistance to complete it, such as improving my resume and finding suitable positions and training possibilities.

Libby

I owe so much to the Your Caring Way program, they helped give me independence from my caring role, helped my sense of identity and being, they helped give me my confidence back after being out of the workforce for several years due to my caring role. The support of this program to find stable, suitable employment, and now I’m stable doing what I love in disability support.

Kaitlyn

My first meeting with Your Caring Way was a powerful turning point in my journey from full-time caring to achieving paid work. Now I am the Co-Director of Branch Out Support. For the first time ever, I have business goals AND the capacity to achieve them. Your Caring Way has changed not just my life, but the lives of my children, my partner, and the people I now have capacity to support.

Ali

I have been the main carer for my parents over the last 4 years. I was out of work for a while and finding the stress of financial caring responsibilities a battle of the mind, pocket, and ability. My Vocational Support Planner always encouraged, supported, and shared all his knowledge and experience with me. He points out my valuable qualities and shares in my excitement and my lows.

Josephine

Like most carers, sometimes I just sit and think “is this all my life will ever be?” I’m a carer for my daughter who has Cerebral Palsy, asthma, and other things. I was 60 and had been out of the workforce for a few years, getting older made it harder. Your Caring Way helped me get two jobs. If it wasn’t for them, I’d still be looking for work.

Lyn

The first thing we spoke about was my strengths and I didn’t think I knew how to do anything. I now work in a day options program, I run a music and karaoke group and cooking classes. I plan to keep working part-time. I also have plans to travel overseas every year. I can actually see that now, I can actually do that.

Rosa, Day Options Program Coordinator

I don’t think I had a resume since I was at school, 30 odd years ago. Seeing it all on paper it sort of whacked me in the face to go, wow, I have done so much and have done nothing with it. Then I got an interview with Home Instead and I have been working there for more than 2 years. Now I’m the one ringing Shauna going “Have you got someone?”

Kylie, Recruiter

I have been a carer for my wife with severe a mental health condition for 18 years. I felt very alone and isolated! This program is that buddy, that friend, that ally, who can and does sustain us while we dedicate our all to help the people who need so much empathy and support themselves.

Gary

Everything is going great, the work itself has been great, and I'm enjoying every minute. They cater to my needs when it comes to appointments for my children and also my university and that is what I've been looking for. Again I can't thank you guys enough for the support and staring me in the right direction.

Jane

I’ve been out of the workforce for eight years, caring for our son with neurodevelopmental disability. Your Caring Way came into my life at my lowest point. It is an invaluable service transforming who I thought was “unemployable” given my carer demands and circumstances into someone who can identify my strengths and potential and connect me to training and employment opportunities.

Wendy

My Support Planner is compassionate and understanding about my ongoing caring responsibilities, offering great suggestions and meeting my vocational needs. I did the courses through Your Caring Way which will help me enormously in my business. By understanding carers’ needs, and being flexible in how they deliver support, the Your Caring Way program is a much needed service to carers.

Briget

The help with the resume and the listening when I break down in tears crying on the phone, because I was just so frustrated and didn’t know what to do. It was overwhelming and Shauna is there saying calm down, let’s see what we can do. And if she couldn’t find the answer, she would find someone to help. Those were the biggest things.

Are you a carer?

If you provide unpaid care and support to family members or friends who have a disability, mental illness, chronic condition, terminal illness or who are frail aged, you are a carer.

Across Australia, 2.7 million people provide unpaid care for a family member or friend. However, it’s estimated that up to 79 percent don’t identify as a carer.
